Last Known Civil War Widow Dies at 97

Alberta Martin, the last known widow of a civil war veteran, has died at the age of 97. Alberta Martin married William Japser Martin, a Confederate veteran, in 1927, when she was 21 and he was 81. William Martin died less than four years later, and Alberta Martin married his grandson two months after that. Hear NPR's Melissa Block.

Bush, Kerry Mark Memorial Day

Both President George Bush and Sen. John Kerry take part in Memorial Day services to honor America's war dead. The president laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery, while Kerry visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. NPR's Pam Fessler reports.

Alabama GOP Primary

Some of Alabama's candidates in Tuesday's Republican primary are using an unlikely figure to gain support -- former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore. Moore was removed from his post after defying a federal order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from Alabama's state judicial building. Melanie Peeples reports.

New Details Emerge on Death of Lynch's Fellow Soldier

The U.S. Census Bureau says more than one in six adopted kids are of a different race than their parents. Statistics show that in the foster care system nationally, almost 60 percent of children are black or Latino. For years, there have been acrimonious debates over whether children of color should be placed only with parents who are of the same race.
