An American Werewolf in London Reviews

A near perfect blend of horror and comedy.

Full Review | Original Score: 4.5/5 | Apr 15, 2024

A classic for more than its outstanding visual effects, John Landis' film deftly explores queer and anti-semitic elements via its lead character David in ways that are both coded and explicit. Also: these set pieces go HARD.

This is a revolutionary movie... It pull's off the difficult trick of revitalizing the genre while parodying at the same time.

If you’ve never owned this film on home video before, then this is the edition to buy. If you want the best possible video quality, this is the edition to buy.

Until it derails at the end, John Landis' tongue-in-bloody-cheek thriller does a nice job of mixing its horror with humor.

I don't think anyone could argue that Landis is an excellent filmmaker, and An American Werewolf in London is a prime example of his talent.

There is something inexpressibly fresh and zany in this kind of macabre humor, a delighting in the sheer movie nonsense of it all, that makes American Werewolf a wacky marriage of the sophomoric and the surreal.

A howling good horror comedy that continues to be the high standard in creature feature filmmaking.

...what a modern film should be; the story is simple and uncontrived, the scope personal and intense, and stakes small but engaging...

The hallucinations and gnarly ghosts give this movie an unexpected Smorgasborg of horror.

...an entirely erratic yet ultimately satisfying endeavor...

The prosthetics and animatronics of the initial transformation sequence are the unforgettable (and Oscar-winning) highlight of the picture.

David's writhing discomfort in his own skin marks not just the monstrous metamorphosis in and of genre, but also that deep sense of estrangement experienced by any well-meaning if gauche tourist tripping up on local lore and mores.

While it doesn't bore or anger the public, it is one of those films that's forgotten as soon as it's over. [Full Review in Spanish]

It feels increasingly like a symbol of traveler abroad alienation-what trying to live in a place that isn't home can feel like: confusing, rageful, even physically debilitating.

Aside from the special effects, this film is a fun time at the movies, but not as memorable as other horror classics.

I suspect Landis hoped to keep moviegoers eerily disarmed with an unpredictable mixture of wacky and terrifying touches. Unfortunately, his own touch... is so slack and uncertain that the movie ends up dramatically shapeless.

John Landis teaches us two things in An American Werewolf in London (1981): turning into a werewolf is a very painful process, and the dead are boring!

A film that, despite 35 years of evolution in special effects, do not surpass the carnal naturalness of this one. [Full review in Spanish]

Landis maintains the delicate balance between horror and humor until the final scene's gratuitous series of car crashes.
