Phil is a smart, funny, lovable guy with a major dependency issue. From the time he gets up in the morning until the minute his head hits the pillow at night, every waking moment is made possible by his mobile device. When he is forced to buy a new phone, the latest model comes with a digital assistant named Jexi. At first, his new artificially intelligent friend is helpful and solicitous, challenging Phil to change his life for the better, whether it be asking for a promotion at work or pursuing the girl of his dreams. But as Phil becomes more independent, Jexi turns from helpful to hostile… and suddenly Phil is confronted with a trash-talking tech nightmare who has very specific ideas about what constitutes a service contract.

This is one of the worse times of year for the home market. Until we start getting the holiday blockbusters landing on DVD / Blu-ray, there’s not much to talk about. That’s not to say there are no good releases, as God’s Own Country, The Square, and Steven Universe: Season One are all easily worth picking up. There are just no big releases. For example, the Pick of the Week goes to Professor Marston & The Wonder Women on Blu-ray, which was sadly ignored by moviegoers when it first hit theaters.

There isn’t a huge selection of limited releases this week, but there are several earning excellent reviews, such as 120 Beats Per Minute, Jane, Tragedy Girls, and others. Additionally, films like The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Wonderstruck are earning merely good reviews, but have enough buzz that they could still do well in theaters.

I know what you are thinking. “Didn’t X-Men: Apocalypse come out on DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack in early October?” Yes. However, the screener didn’t arrive till November and that’s too late to get a review done. That said, no screeners arrived this week, so I thought I might was well write a late review rather than do nothing.
