I don't have an exalted view about advice political scientists can give political professionals about campaigns. But we might have a few relevant insights on the Democratic party's current dilemmas. 1/n
First, at root this is an information problem and a coordination problem. Actors have incomplete information, as well as private information and incentives to misrepresent that information.
Biden can't allow any hint that he is thinking through the pros and cons of dropping out, or it would increase pressure to quit. So he can't fully consult a wide range of leaders and campaign professionals.
