Popular SA bakery wins best sausage roll in Australia makes surprising secret ingredient claim

A beloved bakery has just won the 2024 grand trophy for the best sausage roll in Australia and for the second time.

Banana Boogie Bakery in South Australia's Belair was awarded the honour by the Baking Association of Australia after beating the runner up, Ray's Patisserie in QLD, by just one point.

The famous bakery competed against 49 others around Australia entering a total of 274 sausage rolls.

Winning the competition in 2023 with their huge 'O.G' sausage roll, owner Jason Spencer tried to perfect the formula with a slightly thinner pastry for this year's competition.

But the judges didn't think it needed perfecting and told Mr Spencer to go back to the original recipe.

'The head judge at the end of the night said 'your pastry is just impeccable', like he just can't fault it,' a proud Mr Spencer said.

'We pride ourselves on our pastry, it's amazing. We try to get the perfect pastry every day,' he added.

Judges also praised the winning roll for its 'neutral' and 'balanced' flavour, as it blended in perfectly with the onion and salt, and didn't commit the ultimate sausage roll sin of being too dry.

'We¿ve got a secret ingredient that came from a mistake we made a few years ago, but of course, I can¿t share that. But I think what sets us apart is our dedication to the craft,' owner James Spencer said

Mr Spencer was elated to have won the award twice, saying that it proved the first year's win wasn't just a 'fluke'.

He did admit there was a special secret ingredient to his sausage rolls.

'We've got a secret ingredient that came from a mistake we made a few years ago, but of course, I can't share that. But I think what sets us apart is our dedication to the craft,' he said.

Best sausage roll in Australia wasn't the only win the bakery took away, they also took out first place awards for their hugely popular vanilla slice, chocolate donuts and steak pies.

Fans of the South Australian bakery weren't surprised by the judges decisions.

'Can attest,' one regular customer said of the award winning sausage rolls.

'The vanilla slice was the greatest thing ever. I can never go back there,' another joked.

Banana Boogie Bakery's famous vanilla slice comes in a deep fried, chocolate sauce slathered Biscoff version that one customer said was an 'epic...11/10, microphone drop' kind of good.

Jason isn't about to rest on his pastry laurels with his sights already set on winning the Great Australian Vanilla Slice competition later this year.

One dubious Aussie who was yet to try Banana Boogie's number one sausage roll didn't seem convinced that it was the best in the country.

'They haven't had my grandfather's,' he quipped.
