I'm from Canada and I've figured out Australia's 'ugly' solution to the freezing weather

A Canadian expat has exposed the 'ugly' solution Australians have come up with to battle the biting cold Down Under.

Alexandra Tuohey, who now lives in Victoria, was shocked when she realised the 'coldest [she] had ever felt' was living in a Melbourne share house in July despite coming from the notoriously icy Canada.

'Australian homes are so cold that they actually invented their own type of clothing to survive the winter: indoor thermal wear,' she said in a video.

'Almost all homes [in Canada] have central heating [that] wouldn't go off all winter. The homes are well insulated, though, so it retains heat better,' she added.

Alexandra identified three items essential to surviving an Australian winter indoors: an Oodie, Ugg boots, and a Kathmandu puffer jacket.

'The Oodie may be the ugliest thing you've seen anyone put on their body but it's vital to survive winter,' the expat said.

Oodies are wearable blankets with hoods and a large pouch in the front. The loungewear is particularly handy in Australia where most homes are colder indoors than outside during the winter.

'[The Oodie] will cause you to sweat uncontrollably unless you are in a room which is 15C or less - which means it's the perfect accessory to ensure you don't develop pneumonia this winter in Australia,' Alexandra said.

Aussies consider puffer jackets official winter wear

Alexandra said Aussies also need to protect their feet from the cold - which is where Ugg boots come in.

'As a Canadian, I did not understand the Ugg boot. It wasn't warm enough to wear outside and my home was warm so I wasn't going to wear it inside. However, it's the perfect shoe to wear inside a cold, cold Australian home,' she said.

Alexandra's third and final winter must-have accessory is the Kathmandu puffer jacket.

'Originally designed to go camping or hiking, it has been repurposed by Australians to wear any time they cannot wear their Oodie,' she said.

'So to go to work, or to someone else's cold house - the puffer jacket is the most appropriate thing you can wear.'

John Pabon, an American sustainability consultant from Melbourne, previously told Daily Mail Australia: 'When Australians complain about their houses being cold during the winter, they're not just having a whinge, it's scientifically proven.

'The World Health Organisation consistently ranks Australian homes as some of the coldest in the world.

'They have a metric that says for a house to be considered not cold it has to be above 18C inside. Well, Aussie houses, they totally miss the mark.'

Many Australians agreed with Alexandra's assessment.

'I'm wearing my Uggs and avocado Oodie right now,' one said.

Another added, 'Love my Oodie. They sell Oodie pants now too.'

'The puffer jacket, otherwise known as the Tassie tuxedo. We wear them to work, funerals... everywhere,' a man wrote.

'I come home from work and take off my Kathmandu puffer and put on my Oodie and Uggs,' another confirmed.
