Spain's monstrous midfield will build a Berlin Wall... Declan Rice and Co must tear it

OLIVER HOLT IN BERLIN: Tourists still mill around the base of the jagged, bomb-damaged outline of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the best-known symbol of West Berlin in the days when the city was divided by its wall. But a rival attraction has risen alongside the building that Berliners call the Hollow Tooth. It is a towering advertising billboard with a giant picture of the Spain midfielder Pedri in action. 'You got this,' the caption says. Sadly for Pedri, Toni Kroos got him first. Pedri might have been kicked out of the tournament but the caption still says what most believe: Spain have got this. One family has been quoted £18,000 for a return flight, while several others have been told there are no landing slots available. There are also no direct commercial flights back to London on Monday to add to their woe. Prior to Wednesday's semi-final win over the Netherlands, families were comfortable with the level of availability for direct flights in Berlin.

So far so normal. Then come the youthful yet unmistakable features of Lionel Messi leaning over from the left, sleeves shoved up over his elbows, laughing because he is willing to muck in and lend a hand but not entirely sure how to go about it. Anderson had taken the field through a guard of honour formed by both teams, pausing to shake the hand of West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and acknowledging a standing ovation of another packed house at Lord's. It was a poignant moment, not least because no one expected his long Test career to extend beyond lunch. This really was it. He began, from the Nursery End, with a harmless over full of width and grimaces. Then, only 10 minutes in, came a moment of Anderson magic: lured by swing into aiming for leg, Josh Da Silva was undone by seam movement that caught the edge. Jamie Smith did the rest, and Anderson had Test wicket No 704.
