Olympic Medal Table
The medal table always makes for intriguing reading and Tokyo is no different. It was the Americans who came out on top five years ago in Rio de Janeiro, with Great Britain placing second and China third.
A total of 87 different countries won medals back in 2016, with 59 athletes winning at least one gold medal.
Team GB finished fourth, third and second at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Games respectively, and it will be fascinating to see where they place in Tokyo.
With the Games now in full flow, scroll up to keep up-to-date with every medal won.
