EXCLUSIVE: The planned Arkham Asylum TV series is no longer moving forward at Max. As Variety exclusively reported in October 2022, Antonio Campos had come onboard to serve as writer and showrunner of the series, which was originally meant to be set within the world of Matt Reeves' “The Batman.” But according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Campos’ version will not proceed. It is still possible, though, that a new project set within the infamous Gotham City asylum could be developed in the future, the individual noted. wp.me/pc8uak-1lEnMg

The summer movie season keeps on rolling in theaters this month with the likes of “Despicable Me 4” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” But over on streaming platforms, some giant tentpoles and acclaimed indies from earlier in 2024 are gearing up to make their own debuts. Warner Bros., for example, is launching “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” on Max after a successful box office run with $570 million worldwide. The A24 queer crime thriller “Love Lies Bleeding,” which stars Kristen Stewart in an acclaimed performance, will also stream on Max. Perhaps the biggest new streaming offering of July is Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the long-awaited fourth installment in Eddie Murphy’s comedy franchise. Most series run for longer than 28 episodes before they’re deemed worthy of a Top 10 list, but “The Bear” is in a class of its own. The FX dramedy became one of today’s most important TV projects almost immediately after its debut in 2022. And a lot of “The Bear’s” runaway success comes from the big swings it took early on, jumping in and out of different filmmaking styles while remaining cohesive as a whole. Just ask the voters of the Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, where “The Bear” consistently sweeps. From the pilot that started it all to the one-off character studies that keep the show fresh, read Variety's ranking of the 10 best episodes of "The Bear" here: https://lnkd.in/g89V8MwE

Netflix co-founder and executive chairman Reed Hastings has joined the growing number of Democrats publicly urging Joe Biden to step down as the party’s 2024 nominee for president. Biden is seeking re-election, but his disastrous performance at the first presidential debate against Donald Trump has led some Democrats to insist he step down as they believe that’s the only way the party can beat Trump. “Biden needs to step aside to allow a vigorous Democratic leader to beat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings said in an email to The New York Times. https://lnkd.in/g9P2bvfu
