Actress Hannah Waddingham serves up a bold style statement at Wimbledon with a flowing floral print dress and oversized white sunglasses - as celebrity spectators defied the drizzle

The all-white dress code for players is a quintessential part of Wimbledon’s elegant charm.

And actress Hannah Waddingham got into the SW19 spirit yesterday, wearing a pair of bold, white sunglasses that bore a striking resemblance to 3D cinema specs.

The Ted Lasso star, 49, paired her oversized retro shades with a flowing purple floral print dress and black blazer as she watched the Centre Court action.

Rain halted play for more than two hours on some courts, but Ms Waddingham put on an animated display as she watched No 5 seed Daniil Medvedev beat Alexandre Muller of France.

Meanwhile, former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova donned a military-style khaki ensemble as she appeared in the Royal Box with partner Alexander Gilkes, where she was joined by former prime minister Theresa May.

Mrs May, who attended with her husband Sir Philip, looked engrossed in the day’s tennis yesterday ahead of voters heading to the polls today.

Elsewhere, Lauren Silverman, partner of music mogul Simon Cowell, wore a crisp white dress paired with a chunky black belt; and a heavily tattooed Romeo Beckham also opted for white as he watched Emma Raducanu breezing past Elise Mertens. Meanwhile, US tennis star Coco Gauff put her own spin on the players’ white uniform with a custom cut-out tennis dress that evoked memories of Serena Williams’ outfit during her last Wimbledon final in 2019.

The 20-year-old told how she asked for cut-out panels on the sleeveless New Balance dress she wore for her win over compatriot Caroline Dolehide to reflect her love of crop tops off the court.

‘[At] Wimbledon there’s not too much you can do in the colour department,’ Ms Gauff said yesterday.

‘We just tried to do something different with the cut of the dress.

‘I like to wear crop tops a lot. That cut is kind of like, supposed to be like a crop top, in an elegant, Wimbledon-type way.’ The 2023 US Open winner has told how she plans her Grand Slam outfits up to two years in advance.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk took inspiration from her wedding dress for her tennis outfit this year.

The dresses – both designed by the racket supplier Wilson – featured a cut-out back and stunning button detailing on the front.

Elsewhere, Naomi Osaka’s mega ruffled custom kit by Nike divided fans as she defeated Diane Parry on Monday. Described on the Wimbledon official website as ‘an elaborate outfit that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the Met Gala’, it was made up of a cropped racerback top covered in ruffles with a matching flowing skirt, with both featuring small bursts of forest green.
