Award-winning VR and web immersive training platform.

About us

Embodied Labs® is revolutionizing training in healthcare and social services by enabling caregivers to learn what it’s like to have a disease or impairment through first-person virtual experiences. Fostering actionable empathy with interactive learning journeys, our platform empowers care providers to deliver more compassionate, human-centered care that improves outcomes, and enhances quality of life. Over 100+ organizations across the aging care continuum - including government entities, academic institutions, senior services organizations, and Fortune 100 retail health companies - have adopted the Embodied Labs’ platform to up-skill their own staff, teach the next generation of healthcare workers, and support the informal family and friend caregivers they serve in their communities. Developed with topic experts, our first person experiences are powerful and memorable. They create a perceived lived experience that allows learners to remember rather than imagine, with branching narratives that enable better decision-making through choices. Founded in 2016, the Embodied Labs® experience library includes shared immersive experiences such as living through progressing Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, and embodying the first person perspectives of other common caregiving situations such as PTSD, trauma-informed care, social isolation, aging in the LGBTQ+ community, and health assessments in complex home and community-based settings. Our experiences: • Provide a first person perspective of older adults and caregivers as they navigate the aging process. • Are designed with world renowned subject matter experts and immersive content designers to serve the needs of organizations that work with caregivers and older adults. • Return greater benefits in training outcomes, learner satisfaction and engagement compared traditional, non-immersive methods.

Dementia care providers often face situations where patient behaviors can be puzzling and frustrating. Dr. Beth Fauth, a leading professor at Utah State University, offers a valuable perspective that can transform how we approach these challenges. Dr. Fauth emphasizes the importance of empathy. By considering the patient's viewpoint, we can better understand dementia behaviors as natural reactions to a disorienting reality. Imagine yourself in a situation where you don't recognize your surroundings or the people around you. Wouldn't you also feel anxious and agitated? Embodied Labs puts this concept into practice by incorporating first-person perspectives into our immersive experiences. By allowing caregivers to step into the shoes of those they care for, we foster a deeper level of understanding and compassion. This approach leads to demonstrably improved care outcomes, as data shows increased empathy translates into more patient-centered interactions, fostering trust and reducing stress for both patient and caregiver. We're thrilled to share that our partnership with CCTA (Central California Adult Services Training Academy) is making a significant impact on communities across the state of California. This past week, our Director of Customer Success Emily Smith and Director Instructional Design Erin Washington joined the CCTA team lead by Rachael Castro in San Jose. CCTA's training equipped aging services staff, IHSS, adult protective services, and the Department of Social Services from Santa Clara with invaluable skills to support older adults and their families. Why it matters: • Real-World Results: This training goes beyond communication skills. It uses our immersive VR simulation to help staff truly understand the challenges faced by older adults and their families by putting them in first person perspectives.  • High Impact Learning: Our data shows that immersive training not only accelerates learning, but allows for better preparation when encountering real life situations, while being simulated in a safe, controlled learning environment.  • Empowers Caregivers: We know many social workers are caregivers themselves. This training helps them not only support clients but also improve their own communication and empathy skills at home. By partnering with CCTA, together we’ve expanded reach to train more frontline workers, empowering them to provide compassionate and effective care. We are truly grateful for our longstanding partnership with CCTA in their work –  from understanding the challenges of aging to improving communication with clients and families, their training is truly making a difference.

What does immersive technology have in common with human connection? Turns out, a lot more than you think. When building Embodied Labs, our founders discovered that using a first person perspective, and interactive, immersive storytelling could actually bring humans closer together. A topic our own CEO, Carrie Shaw brought to the audience during her keynote speech last week at the National Memory Care Symposium. When we look at the numbers of those affected by conditions across the aging care continuum, one thing becomes clear – the need for empathetic, humanized care and the training mechanisms to assist that. In Embodied Labs case, our platform brings care providers closer to the person whose care they are supporting – whether in a professional, or a home care environment, by leveraging VR or web technology for training. These experiences put the provider in the prospective patients shoes, giving them a first hand view of what it feels like to have conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia or macular degeneration. The outcome? ↳ 75% higher retention of information ↳ 3.75x more emotionally connected ↳ Reduced burnout, errors, and turnover in staff ↳ Better quality of care As a team who is passionate about creating a world that we ourselves want to age into, bridging the gap between technology and human connection in care will always remain front and center. A huge thank you to LeadingAge Maryland and LifeSpan Network for including our team at the National Memory Care Symposium last week. It’s always an honor to be a part of reshaping the picture of memory care.
