Cuckoo (2024) Amanda Luberto [Stevens and Schafer] create powerful tension and an eerie ambiance that brings the movie to a higher level. Any time they’re on-screen, it’s easy to forget that the ending doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Jaws 2 (1978) Mike Petryni While it's not worth standing too long in line for, it's [a] pleasant little thriller.

4/5
Alien Resurrection (1997) Bob Fenster Jeunet has created a striking behemoth of a spaceship, a dark, menacing machine that is ripping at the seams with the throbbing of deadly biology.

It Ends With Us (2024) Meredith G. White Even with all the cards stacked in his favor, Baldoni's lackluster direction is what kills the emotion.

2.5/5
The Instigators (2024) Bill Goodykoontz The whole thing feels flat somewhere, with little blips of comedic inspiration. It's not that it misses more than it hits. It's that it just doesn't take that many shots.

Alien 3 (1992) Bob Fenster Instead of trying to outspectacle Aliens, this third chapter in the science-fiction saga takes us down a menacing, twisting side path that is as fascinating as the first two movies.

Coup! (2023) Bill Goodykoontz A dark comedy about class warfare, government overreach and infectious disease. It’s a lot more fun than that sounds.

Kneecap (2024) Dina Kaur Do I wish I saw more of Fassbender on my screen? Of course. Does it almost not even matter because the main three actors/musicians carry the movie so well? Also yes.

Aliens (1986) Marsha McCreadie Weaver does a terrific job of showing extreme anxiety. You can't blame her.

Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger (2024) Bill Goodykoontz Movies about movies don’t always work... But “Made in England” is so good in its own right, as a gateway to so many remarkable films, that it’s a great starting point for the uninitiated and a great reminder for everyone else.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Meredith G. White Superfans of the entire Marvel universe will find this film filled with top-notch comedy and action, Easter eggs, cameos that left the audience gasping and cheering, a lot of meta jokes and digs at 20th Century Fox.

Twisters (2024) Kaely Monahan Is Twisters the movie of the summer? Could be, but at the very least it's a fun ride and worth seeing -- maybe even twice (looking at you Glen Powell).

3.5/5
Widow Clicquot (2023) Dina Kaur To say Bennett carries this film on her back is an understatement. She takes on the challenge of depicting romance, passion, grief, strength and perseverance.

4/5
Touch (2024) Kaely Monahan There is a literary beauty woven throughout the film. He asks you to examine what it means to reach out and touch someone — or have someone touch you. Both the physical and the metaphysical are orchestrated wonderfully.

3.5/5
Fly Me to the Moon (2024) Reia Li The tension between Kelly and Cole is funny and interesting, and Johansson and Tatum seem most at ease getting under each other’s skin.

3/5
MaXXXine (2024) Meredith G. White While the performances were killer (no, I will not stop with the puns) it was the lack of familiarity with the people surrounding Maxine that left me not caring who lived or died.

Jaws (1975) Phil Strassberg A powerful, well-made thriller... Jaws is dynamite, artistically as well as commercially.
Posted Jul 02, 2024
2/5
Janet Planet (2023) Kaely Monahan Ultimately, the movie is really boring. Any charm or spark it might have had is quashed by a lack of strong direction and writing.

Kinds of Kindness (2024) Bill Goodykoontz “Kinds of Kindness” has its own demented charms. You just have to wade through a lot to find them.

Thelma (2024) Bill Goodykoontz It’s an impressive feature debut for Margolin.

3.5/5
The Bikeriders (2023) Bill Goodykoontz The whole isn't quite as interesting as the sum of its parts, is another way to put it. The parts, though, are quite good on their own.

Inside Out 2 (2024) Bill Goodykoontz “Inside Out 2” more than justifies its existence and then some.

Brats (2024) Bill Goodykoontz “Brats” is definitely McCarthy’s journey. What saves it are the people he brings along for the ride.

Tuesday (2023) Kaely Monahan Never before have I laughed and cried so much in a movie about dying.

3/5
Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) Kaely Monahan Lots of gunfights, ridiculous stunts (with some killer drone camera work), and just enough emotional pull to give this movie some substance — although not much.

In a Violent Nature (2024) Bill Goodykoontz You may be satisfied, you may not. But you won't be on the fence.

Babes (2024) Bill Goodykoontz Maybe, instead of the classes, expectant parents should just be shown “Babes” instead. It answers a lot of the questions no one asks, sparing nothing. Nothing at all.

Hit Man (2023) Bill Goodykoontz “Hit Man,” Linklater’s latest film, falls into the fun-with-a-heart (and brain) category. It’s got a lot going for it. For one thing, there’s Linklater’s deft touch, particularly when juggling comedy and romance (with a little crime drama thrown in).

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) Bill Goodykoontz “The question is,” Dementus asks, “do you have what it takes to make it epic?” Miller answers that question with a resounding yes.

IF (2024) Dina Kaur What is supposed to be a comedy develops into an honest film about coping with loss.

I Saw the TV Glow (2024) Bill Goodykoontz At times I’m not sure I fully understood it. But I’m sure that I won’t forget it.

Back to Black (2024) Ed Masley Winehouse herself emerges as a tragic figure whose fiery spirit defined her as much as the vulnerability that fueled her finest moments as the vocalist who made you feel her heartache like it was your own.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) Bill Goodykoontz The fights are boring. More brains and less brawn probably aren't a prescription for box-office success for a movie like this. But it's a movie I'd rather see.

Evil Does Not Exist (2023) Bill Goodykoontz If you stick with it, “Evil Does Not Exist” offers rich rewards, as well as lessons, no matter how inscrutable at times.

The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023) Bill Goodykoontz “The Last Stop in Yuma County” is a promising debut, and a welcome chance to watch some actors you’ve seen in other things get a chance to branch out a little. It’s dark fun, assuming you find watching escalating tension a good time.

3.5/5
Unfrosted (2024) Bill Goodykoontz Everyone is both in on the joke and completely invested in getting a laugh. Like most broad comedy, not every joke lands. I didn’t keep a tally of what the percentage of hits vs. misses is, but I’m confident that more jokes landed than not.

Planet of the Apes (1968) Stewart Allen Sci-fi is no longer crawling. In this movie, it stands up and walks, stumbles, stumbles again, but stays on its feet.

The Fall Guy (2024) Bill Goodykoontz It’s light, it’s airy, it’s preposterous and it is a lot of fun.

3/5
Trainspotting (1996) Bob Fenster What saves the movie from being another depressing study of wasted lives is the filmmakers' unblinking, barbed humor, which spikes both modern society and the rebels who reject it. Boyle proves that his storytelling talents in Shallow Crave were no fluke.

Planet of the Apes (2001) Bill Muller Planet of the Apes ranks as the spectacular movie of the summer, a wild, escapist ride that trumps the original with dazzling sets, funky costumes and some of the finest makeup work ever.

Steel Magnolias (1989) Bob Fenster What works so well in Steel Magnolias is the wonderful comic ride through the years of these women's lives.

Postcards From the Edge (1990) Bob Fenster Postcards From the Edge is a funny movie, not because of the women's desperate situations, but because of the sarcastic reactions the women have to their dilemmas.

Boy Kills World (2023) Bill Goodykoontz It’s nobody’s masterpiece, but it is an exceptionally promising start for Mohr, making his feature debut as a director.

3.5/5
Sasquatch Sunset (2024) Bill Goodykoontz It’s easy to forget that these are purely mythical creatures; the way the film is made, they seem more like some prehistoric version of mankind, evolving on the go.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) Meredith G. White It's proof positive that a great movie can be fun, flashy and ridiculous, with an uncomplicated plot and still work.

Little Women (1994) Bob Fenster The saga of the March sisters is still engrossing, and the sisters remain stalwart as role models for generations of female individualists, inspired by the book to do great things.

Civil War (2024) Bill Goodykoontz It’s one of the best movies of the year. And among journalists, at least, it should be one of the most-talked about.
