About the Office of Vital Records and Statistics

By law, OVRS reviews and registers birth, death, and fetal death records in San Diego. Records are then sent to the San Diego Recorder/Assessor/County Clerk.

  • Records are maintained for the current and prior years.
  • Burial permits are maintained for one (1) year.
  • Medical, and some non-medical, information are coded for statistical reasons. This coding allows agencies to assess health needs and trends and carry out research.
