A medical esthetician has revealed why she's not a fan of celeb-loved pimple patches - and why they may actually make your blemishes worse.

The information was recently shared on TikTok by medical esthetician Maja, who is the owner of Self Skin medical spa in Canada.

She often takes to social media to share her skincare tips and tricks with viewers, this time explaining why pimple patches are not exactly saving your skin.

Over the past few years, pimple patches, which are meant to help heal blemishes, have been a huge hit in the beauty community.

They are made in all sorts of fun colors and shapes - with celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Addison Rae, Kim Kardashian and her daughter, North West, all being fans.

'Reason number one why I don't like using pimple patches is because it causes inflammation and it causes a barrier dysfunction around the healthy skin around the pimple,' she began.

Maja showed a picture as an example, where there was a red irritation left around the spot where the pimple patch had been applied.

'Reason number two, it's basically like a Band-Aid and you're basically putting a shield over it, which is great for you to stop picking, but you're basically blocking out all the skincare that you're supposed to put on your skin, and you're not letting it go on that pimple,' she explained.

'The pimple wants that skincare, it doesn't want the stupid Band-Aid on its face,' she added.

Finally, Maja revealed that some of these pimple patches have salicylic acid in them and other exfoliating ingredients, which isn't exactly great for your blemish.

'Basically, if you have an active ingredient like a salicylic acid or a retinol and then leave it on for about 24 hours, it's going to cause a barrier dysfunction,' she explained.

However, she admitted that she did like pimple patches for ingrown hairs and body pimples.

'The skin on our body is much thicker than the skin on our face, therefore, we can handle more aggressive activity on there,' Maja shared.

She revealed that you can stick them right onto your butt, arm, or even back acne.

'But on your face, I'd rather just have you use your skincare and let that soak in,' Maja concluded.

In the comments section, many chimed in to share the unique ways they use pimple patches, while others agreed that pimple patches sometimes made their spots worse.

'I find them quite useful on my face but I cut them into quarters so they last longer and don't irritate the skin around the spot and only target the spot,' one person wrote.

Another shared, 'I do my whole routine and put a patch on before bed. I only like them to keep my pillow from rubbing a spot.'

'Meanwhile I just thought I was doing something wrong because pimple patches seem to make my problems worse,' someone else wrote.

One TikTok user even admitted, 'I had a chin pimple and put a patch on before a trip with my husband to Florida. Patch irritation + touch of sun = what appears to be a nipple on my chin!!!! Never again.'
