In the clip, which has so far been viewed more than 1.3 million times, Joseph can be seen in the kitchen of the restaurant in Queens.

He begins to prepare a plate of oysters as the man behind the camera asks: 'Is it true that when you eat oysters they are alive?'

And, to the horror of many foodies, he replied: 'Of course! When you open them up fresh, they are alive.

'Most times, if you squeeze lemon on those now, you'll see the motherf**ker jiggle and move.'

The clip, which was light-heartedly accompanied with the soundtrack of Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees, was captioned: 'Did you know oysters are eaten alive?'

But social media users were left stunned by the discovery as one wrote: 'I did not need to know or see this.'

Another shared: 'I was today years old, and I promise you, I wish I never learned this.'

'I've been chugging down oysters my whole life. I didn't know they were still alive,' someone else added.

But there is something of a silver lining.

Delicious clarified the statement by explaining: 'The good news is that your oyster is very unlikely to still be alive when you eat it.

'The bad news is, it died within a few minutes of being shucked.

'Once an oyster's flesh is removed from the shell by cutting the adductor muscle (that tough bit that keeps the oyster clamped shut), the oyster continues to breathe for three to five minutes.'
