A brand new Terminator series is coming to Netflix - but there's a MAJOR twist

The Terminator is returning to the screen as a new series titled, Terminator Zero, which will air on Netflix later next month on August 29.

However, in a major twist, the show will not be live action like the iconic films the project is based on, but instead will be an anime with a total of eight episodes.

On Tuesday, Netflix Anime took to X to share a release date as well as a poster to give fans a glimpse as to what the show will look like.

'Judgement Day comes early - get your sneak peek at the NEW series on 7/5 at Anime Expo & don't miss TERMINATOR ZERO premiering on August 29th, only on Netflix,' the caption read.

According to the post, viewers will have a chance to hear more about Terminator Zero at the 2024 Anime Expo which kicks off at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Thursday, July 4.

Voice actors in the series include Timothy Olyphant - who is known for his roles in projects such as Justified and Santa Clarita Diet.

Olyphant took on the role of The Terminator alongside other stars such as Rosario Dawson, Andre Holland, Sonoya Mizuno and also Ann Dowd.

The premise follows a soldier from 2022 who time travels to 1997 'to change the fate of humanity,' per the official Netflix page for the show.

'She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (Andre Holland) who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet's impending attack on humanity.'

'As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he's hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future, which forever alters the fate of his three children,' the synopsis concluded.

The anime series was created by Mattson Tomlin, and earlier this year in May, he opened up to Entertainment Weekly about his vision for the show.

He explained, 'We're not going to pretend that the third movie didn't happen. We're not going to pretend that the sixth movie didn't happen.'

Tomlin also expressed that he made the decision to have the setting of the anime take place in Japan, but did face a few obstacles.

He said, 'I was aware that there aren't really guns in Japan, and I don't think I quite appreciated how real that was.'

One of the ways the issue was solved is to showcase The Terminator who has blades for arms, per the outlet, and include fight sequences with swords.

'If I was going to fight a Terminator and I don't have guns, what are the weapons that I could concoct?' Mattson questioned.

He also opened up creating the series with original characters: 'I think that it's time to go into new characters and not burden myself with another John and Sarah Connor saga. There's been a run at that a couple of different times.'

Linda Hamilton from the original Terminator film franchise portrayed the role of Sarah Connor while Edward Furlong played John Connor.

'There are a lot of callbacks to the other films,' he continued. 'Fans who really know the movies are going to be doing the Leo meme from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood...'

Tomlin appeared to be referencing to the snippet from the movie where DiCaprio points at a television screen.

'But it's not going to be as direct as John Connor walks in, because John Connor does not walk in.'

Mattson drew a lot of inspiration from the first two Terminator movies and tried to implement the horror aspects from James Cameron's films.

'There's a completely valid version of the Terminator franchise where the Terminator is synonymous with Jason [Voorhees] and Freddy [Krueger], where he is this unrelenting serial killer.'

Tomlin continued, 'There's a little bit of Friday The 13th in here. There's a little bit of Michael Myers [from Halloween] in here.'

The first Terminator film was released in theaters in 1984 - and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, Edward Furlong as well as Earl Boen.

The movie was a box office success upon its premiere, and garnered around $78.3 million in the box office on a budget of $6.4 million.

The second installment in the film franchise was titled Terminator: Judgement Day and was released in 1991, while also being directed by James Cameron.

'There are a lot of callbacks to the other films,' he continued. 'Fans who really know the movies are going to be doing the Leo meme from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood...'

The budget was increased between $94 and $102 million and was another box office success after raking in a whopping $519 million, making it the highest grossing film of the year globally.

Four additional movies were added into the franchise, with other directors stepping behind the camera.

The last installment was Terminator: Dark Fate which premiered in theaters in 2019 and was directed by Tim Miller.

Other TV and web series were also created in the past based on the movies, as well as video games.
